Pepper Hamilton LLP – Honorable Judge James T. Giles (Retired) High School Essay Writing Competition
This year’s Giles Essay Contest 2017 contest is now open to all Philadelphia, Camden and Trenton Public and Charter high school students. Students who submit essays will compete for prizes of (1st) $1,000, (2nd) $500, and (3rd) $250. The winners will be presented with their certificates and prizes at Pepper’s annual Celebrate Diversity Event on July 19, 2017 in Philadelphia. Students must commit to attending the Celebrate Diversity Event (along with parents, guardians, and teachers, if applicable) to compete.
This year’s question focuses on “fake news” and the First Amendment. Students who enter will be invited to attend a session discussing the issues raised by the question and other topics relating to freedom of the press, presented by a prominent Philadelphia-area journalist as well as a Pepper lawyer specializing in First Amendment rights.
